SQUASH
Key’s of Lincolnshire grow a number of varieties of squash and until recently, squash have been relatively unheard of in the United Kingom. Its phenomenal growth in sales over the last few years is in attributed to an increased meda profile; with exposure by celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver pushing its use to a new generation of kitchen adventurers. Squash grows very well in our sandy soils.

We do not use pesticides or any artificial fertiliser, just pure duck compost with honey bees to naturally pollinate the squash flowers. This also allows us to have wonderful Lincolnshire honey which is a valuable addition to our range.

Squash has many nutritional values, being very low in fat and beneficial to people with high cholesterol. Butternut squash is the most popular squash we grow and market, and its sweet, buttery flavour makes it an excellent and diverse vegetable to cook with. It is suitable for baking, roasting, boiling and mashing and is delicious in soups and risottos. It is very popular pureed as it makes a delicious infant food. Baby butternuts are an excellent alternative to a jacket potato, being a much healthier and tastier option.

PUMPKIN
In addition to the vast range of squash grown here we also grow Pumpkins. Pumpkins play an important part in the tradition of Halloween but similarly to squash, it has huge nutritional benefits. Pumpkins are rich in beta-carotene (hence their vivid orange colour), Vitamin A, C, E and K, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium and Zinc. The most nutritional part of pumpkins is the seeds which are normally thrown away but can be saved and toasted. These are high in Protein, Iron, Magnesium, Zinc and Omega 3 essential fatty acids and are consequently prescribed by the nutritional experts.
